The present script that is used in writing Korean is derived from its counterpart Chinese character script known as ‘Hanja’. In the olden day before the reign of King Sejong, who is the inventor of the present script ‘Hangul’. The main purpose of starting the Hangul is to make it easier for the common people to communicate with the king. Nowadays hangul is used as an official language for both the Korean country i.e., South and North Korea. The uses of Hanja have completely stopped in North Korea and the usage of hanja in South Korea is mainly reserved for specific circumstances, such as newspapers, scholarly papers, and disambiguation.
The learning of Hangul, the Korean script, has increased tremendously worldwide, the language is no longer following in the shadow of its neighboring language Chinese and Japanese, thanks to Hallyu, the Korean wave.
