
The most widely spoken variety of French is the Standard French used since the 16th century as the official language of France. The French Language, spoken today by a huge Francophone population, and it all began with the conquest of Gauls by the Romans. When Romans invaded Gaul, the Indo-European Celts who inhabited Gaul had an association in culture and in language, with the Greeks, Romans and Germanic peoples. French is spoken across the globe, by about 75M people; however, it has expanded significantly since 1945, and since then, in fact, the number of people who speak it has increased by 300 per cent.
