5 Rockstar Tips to Learn Sanskrit at Home

The Sanskrit language is a classical language of South Asia belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages. It arose in South Asia after its predecessor languages had diffused there from the northwest in the late Bronze Age. Sanskrit is the sacred language of Hinduism, the language of classical Hindu philosophy, and of historical texts of Buddhism and Jainism. It was a link language in ancient and medieval South Asia, and upon transmission of Hindu and Buddhist culture to Southeast Asia, East Asia and Central Asia in the early medieval era, it became a language of religion and high culture, and of the political elites in some of these regions. As a result, Sanskrit had a lasting impact on the languages of South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia, especially in their formal and learned vocabularies.

5 Rockstar Tips To Learn Sanskrit At Home

Start with the basics.

Though it sounds obvious, the best way to begin is to build a foundation with the basics. Focus on how to say “hello,” in Sanskrit the most common verbs, the most important adjectives, and how to count. Though many apps do let you jump around and cherry-pick lessons, you’re most likely to see success if you follow the curriculum as intended.

Speak the words.

One of the hardest aspects of trying to learn a language at home is speaking. “Reading the words of a language is undeniably important, but then you don’t learn how folks actually sound.” Supplement your learning by listening to native speakers and practising the sounds yourself. Some apps encourage this with repetition tasks. Listening to podcasts and watching TV and movies can also be great supplements for learning.

Be consistent.

For language learning to stick, it’s important to practice regularly, with no more than a couple of days in between lessons. For best results, we recommend at least 30 minutes per day, four to five days per week. If it helps, set yourself a reminder for the same time each day.

Practice with actual humans.

“The keys to learning are repetition and applying the Sanskrit  language in new contexts,”

One of the best tips to learn in Sanskrit is practising with actual humans. You can learn the basics of verbal translation when you practice with native speakers in real life. You can also get the confidence to speak Sanskrit.

Be patient.

Rather than focus on mistakes you may make while learning, celebrate the successes that come from consistent practice.
