The Celts resided in what is now, known as France. The country was called Gaul in those days (Latin: Gallia). Gallia was captured by the Romans and split into provinces. The locals learnt Latin and started to speak it, given that the Romans spoke Latin. Their native tongue, Gaulish, was spoken less commonly, but Breton, which comes from the ancient Celtic language, still spoken today in the French half of the island, was named Brittany. Yet 220 million people speak French either as a 1st or the 2nd language. French is also the language that formed the origins of other languages such as Haitian Creole.
