Careers that demand excellent language skills

Learning the Foreign Language is in vogue in the 21st century. There are multiple careers that demand skilled foreign language speakers; a few of them I will discuss in the blog today. Coupled with the other requisite qualifications foreign language learning could help you with careers that require a high level of proficiency. For the sake of the blog I will address the respective careers as per the required proficiency level high(C2) and competitive(C1).

High C2

Interpreter

Interpretation is a job that requires you to be proficient in two spoken languages at a minimum and with appropriate knowledge and certification, one can apply for a job at the foreign embassy office, or work as a freelancer. It is interesting to note that while simultaneous interpretation is the most lucrative of the lot, it’s as much challenging. The job requires excellent mastery more than C2  over the language. 

Translator

Language translation is another one of the lucrative jobs on the internet, that requires proficiency in two written languages. Several private translation agencies employ people having good knowledge of written Korean. A person can work free-lance after gaining a few years experience. One can opt for translation from a language into Korean or vice-versa. It is a well-paying career option if you are good at your work and possess enough experience to deliver results. While Korean learners can seek proofreading, editorial, content writing, research, media & advertising kind of jobs in different domains, interpretation and translation remain the most sought-after career choices in India and abroad. Again transaction, it requires skilful, proficient people with at least a C2.  

Teacher and Trainer

Skilled Korean language teachers are high in demand. Korean speakers can seek jibs as a corporate trainer, freelance instructor, trainer in language institutes, a teacher in a private school or an ESL teacher in Korea or abroad! Even though you might not find the pay very attractive, it is an excellent place to start your career as an instructor. And from there, you can move to higher opportunities after harnessing your language skills. Thus requires C2 the highest level of CEFR proficiency. 

Consul/ Ambassador/Embassies staff 

A foreign language empowers you to apply for positions at international embassies. Embassies tend to employ certain local workers from the host country to help with a range of tasks. In this aspect, customer service, receptionist, deals with passports and visas, IT technical personnel, dispatcher, interpreter, administrative job, press office job, research analyst, messengers, logistics, and other positions are available. However, if the foreign language is an add on to an existing, competitive, appropriate qualification you could apply for a Consul, Ambassador or Diplomat positions.

Aviation

A foreign language certification adds a feather to your cap, should you fly on a flight to or out of your country of origin as a flight attendant or a pilot. speakers can be accepted as Flight attendants on long-haul international flights need high proficiency in a bilingual pair of languages.

Travel and Tourism

Travel and tourism require a competitive knowledge of the foreign language one is learning. With thousands of visitors travelling worldwide every now and then, the requirement for foreign language speakers remains at a record high. And generally, tourists hire bilingual guides who are proficient in the foreign language to have a secure, and enjoyable experience. Thus, one needs language proficiency to become a tour guide at historical museums, monuments, art galleries, be a tour operator or start their own travel agency.

Hospitality industry

Apart from this, multiple options are available for proficient foreign-language speakers in the hospitality sector. The Hospitality industry is known to be an evergreen industry world over, which looks for multilingual people to work for them in a variety of roles from the receptionist to manager, depending on their qualifications and prior work experience. foreign language learners can secure a well-paying job at Casinos, resorts or at top-ranked, star hotels from the receptionist to manager, depending on your qualifications and prior experience. 

Call Center, IT, BPO and KPO

Foreign language speakers can utilize their foreign language skills to act as a call centre to handle call centre business for overseas clients. Jobs could involve speaking skills, email writing, customer support, or data processing, which again requires proficiency.

Import Export 

Foreign language speakers can also add value by increasing the potential of export & import business when employed with trading companies. There are significant export-import opportunities available worldwide if only you are proficient to the desired level. 

Today most company have footprints worldwide and they look for fluent foreign language speakers to head their regional offices, branch offices located worldover in almost every sector, from Information Technology, business research, gaming, consumer goods, food and beverages, electronics, R&D, life sciences, media, automobiles, tourism, construction industry, trading, finance, services, etc. and communicate with their working counterparts frequently in the target language. In most cases, companies look for knowledgeable, language proficient, suitable field specialists with the ability to communicate in their language, with clients, partners, adding a language premium on top of the basic salary to the successful candidate. And, if the company plans to expand, your knowledge of the foreign language will put you ahead of others considering any post in the company, with high earning potential. 

Other jobs including accounting payables, translations, sales, purchase, technical writings, proofreadings, interpretation, to name a few also require significant proficiency, especially when dealing with documents written in the foreign language.
