Complete Explanation of Chinese Language Levels

Chinese is considered as an important language. HSK in Chinese stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, meaning “Chinese Proficiency Test”.This is a series of tests for non-native Chinese speakers in Mandarin Chinese. Based on the level you pass your proficiency ranges from HSK1 to HSK6.

The six levels for HSK are HSK1, HSK2, HSK3, HSK4, HSK5, and HSK6. HSK1 is the lowest level and HSK6 is the highest in terms of ability. HSK1 and HSK2 is very basic Chinese skills. Then, HSK3 and HSK4 is more sophisticated knowledge of Chinese. HSK5 and HSK6 are the highest proficiency and fluency in Chinese.

HSK1 

This is a beginner level and will have the Knowledge of 150+ words. At this level, you will not be occupied with grammar and will be having isolated phrases and sentences. You will learn very basic information, like greetings, introducing yourself, or will have a small talk to have a conversation and a vocabulary of only 150 words.

HSK2

This is the basic level of learning and will have the Knowledge of 300+ words. In this, you will be more accustomed to the sounds and tones of Mandarin. You will practice talking more about yourself, your family, what you like, what you do not like. You can also understand certain facts as well and very simple words are used to form the sentence structure.

HSK3 

This is the elementary level learning and will have the Knowledge of  600+ words. You will expand your vocabulary to the point where you divide from pointing and naming things to direct information exchange. For example, like asking directions on streets, giving directions to taxi drivers, talking about your holidays with friends, ordering food and drinks in restaurants, with a simple language you know.

HSK4  

This is the Low-intermediate level learning and will have the Knowledge of 1200+words. At this level, you will start feeling the progress. You will be independent enough to go about your business in your Mandarin and your vocabulary is wide enough to meet all your familiar matters and points of personal interests such as at work, at home or in a social gathering. Your speech will resemble cognitively with others and you can express your desires, give reasons and explain your ideas. You will understand the native Chinese speakers easily, likely to arise when travelling in China.

HSK5  

This is the Intermediate level learning and will have the Knowledge of 2500+ words

At this level you will get freedom when speaking Chinese, you can start to read and understand more complex things like news stories that you are familiar with or your favourite books from childhood translated in Mandarin. You will get more spontaneous speech with words no longer stuck in your brain and you will actually start reasoning and giving logical explanations to things.

HSK6 

This is the Upper-intermediate level learning and will have the Knowledge of  5000+ words. You will read and understand something like ocean pollution, pet economy, archaeological findings in Chinese and you will start to get familiar with the vocabulary, you will have fluent speech without much obvious searching for expressions, academic or professional settings.
