The Definite Article "the" is used before a noun that is specific.For instance, "This is the river" tells that the listener and the speaker already know about the river being spoken about. An Indefinite Article is used before a noun that is general. For instance, "This is a river" can be any river in the world. It is not specific. It is a general statement.
