Good Friday, also known as Great Friday, Easter Friday (as it precedes Easter Sunday) or Sorrowful Friday (Germany) holds special significance to the Christian community. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Cavalry. Christ was betrayed by Judas and sentenced to death. Christians believe Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose again three days later – which is marked as Easter Sunday. It may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. ‘Good’ means holy or pious. It is widely declared as a public holiday.

Christians observe this as a solemn day of mourning and keep fasts and pray to the Lord. They don’t consume meat and hot cross buns are traditionally baked on this day.
