To answer this question, it completely depends on the time you spent learning the language, depending on your interest, the ability of grasping, the motivation you are to learn the language and the amount of prior knowledge about it. Telugu is not that hard if you know any other Indian language such as Tamil. Knowledge in Tamil will help you to learn the language in a much faster way, as many more words from Telugu originated from the Tamil language.

The Tamil language has its own literature which will drag you to learning other Indian languages. First, try to learn the differences and similarities between these two languages, you can find many differences and a reasonable amount of similarities. To learn Telugu or any other languages that are derived from Sanskrit, you should be able to invest more time in its pronunciation. Then you have to focus on vocabulary and grammar. It will take a minimum of 6 months to acquire good knowledge of the Telugu language.

If you have a good command of the Tamil language, then 3 months is enough. Both languages share a lot of common words. Grammar,  sentence formations are almost the same, you can do comparative study easily. Telugu Script will be a little bit tricky but you can grasp a good amount of Telugu in this period.

If you want to learn a manageable language, then a duration of 4 months is enough. It will be very easy for Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam speaker to learn any other languages besides the Telugu language and it also depends on how interested you are to learn that language. Telugu dialect has some similarities with Kannada!

  • Watch Movies, plays, short films of that specific language as much as possible whenever you got time, also watch movies with subtitles in the beginning and later watch them without subtitles
  • Speak to your friends or to a native speaker in that language, irrespective of how fluent you are, do not get afraid to make mistakes when speaking the language. 
  • Stay in Andhra Pradesh for your further studies and Telugu will become no problem for you. will accelerate the learning process.
  • Allot some regular time to learn the language. If you follow this method you can manage to speak and handle the situations within a year, it will also accelerate your learning process. 

Always be courageous enough to speak even though you do not know the language properly.
