Ever wondered how many languages you should or you can know
From experience and personal opinion, there is no specific number. You can learn 20 languages but it’s completely up to you. However, it’ll be great if you just don’t stick with the languages you know. Try expanding your knowledge by learning how to use other languages.
One can claim to have learned many languages. The question then is how many languages a person can speak fluently. Some are conversant in several languages, so they can at best have short conversations. However, the extent of their knowledge may not be as deep as a native speaker or someone who has studied the language longer.
This depends on the circumstances. In America, English is often enough since English has become the de facto lingua franca due to the legacy of the British, and then America after WWII.
That being said, it would be better if even Americans knew at least two, either Spanish or French would be best because of Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. Adding a major European language like German or Russian would be even better. In addition to that, an Asian language like Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, or Persian would be even better. So I think at least 4 different languages would be best.
Knowing more than one language makes a person smarter, and allows for easier international travel. I remember when I was in China, it was frustrating to not be able to understand what was being said around me nor read the signs. Still, I learned enough Chinese to say a few basic things. But imagine if the American school system actually effectively taught at least 2 other languages from 1st grade. The world is becoming more and more interconnected, and this would be better for all Americans.
