How to get a passion to learn the Kannada language?
Kannada is amongst the 22 scheduled languages of India and the official language of the government of Karnataka state in the southern region of India. It is the first language of the native people of Karnataka and is also spoken by the non-natives settled in the state. Small proportions of populations in the neighbouring states of Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh also speak Kannada. Likewise, Kannada is spoken by the Kannada population settled outside India on various continents.
Kannada might be the first Indian language to have its own official Test of Proficiency very soon, which shall be a standardised test for assessing the knowledge and proficiency in the Kannada language of non-native Kannada speakers, and which shall be internationally or globally recognised as a proof of one’s Kannada language skills.
Also, Kannada, along with Sanskrit, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Oriya enjoys the status of ‘Classical language in India’.
Kannada is a language spoken as the first language in one of the most developed and progressive metropolitan cities and an IT Hub in India – Bangalore. Undoubtedly, English is a business language spoken widely throughout the world, but if you wish to settle anywhere in Karnataka and be at ease while communicating with the locals, may it be while travelling by means of public transport, or while being in a marketplace, or while talking with your neighbours and/or friends, or even while having a good time, talking informally with your colleagues at the workplace, learning Kannada is must!
Now, if you are planning to move to Karnataka for a few days, or to permanently settle there, or to just visit it for a trip or picnic, it is up to you to either learn the Kannada language by heart or to just mug up on it for the sake of communication.
