How to improve my listening skill in Kannada?

Kannada is among more than 20 languages of the Dravidian group. It is one of the oldest Dravidian languages. Kannada is one of the oldest languages in the world. That is why it has so many interesting tales associated with it. Presently, it is the state language of Karnataka and also the heart language of Kannadigas. Well known as Kanarese or Canarese, this Dravidian language is predominantly spoken by Kannada people in Karnataka.

Kannada is also one of the oldest languages in the country. The Government of India granted Kannada the classical-language status in 2008. Wherever you decide to live long-term, it’s always good to learn the local language. Learning at least a few rudimentary basics can take you a long way and help you connect with the local culture. It is greatly influenced by Sanskrit in terms of vocabulary, grammar and literary style, and also has a lot in common with other Dravidian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. No matter the ways you choose to learn a new language, make a promise to yourself from the beginning that, when you are studying, you are only speaking/writing in the target language.

In this blog, we’ll talk about some of the ways that will help you improve your Kannada listening skills:

  1. Connect with a native speaker – This is a very effective way to improve your listening skill as it offers visual aid as well. Try to communicate with a Kannada language speaker. Having a face-to-face conversation with a native Kannada speaker will improve your listening skill in many ways. Socialize among Kannada speakers. Exposing yourself to an environment where Kannada is very often used will improve your Kannada listening skills.
  2. Immerse in Kannada Media – Watching Kannada movies will also improve your Kannada listening skill effectively. The more often you listen the more your listening skill improves. While watching a movie, check the way the words are pronounced and how it is written with the help of the movie’s subtitle. Listen to lots of Kannada music, radio, and podcasts and observe the differences and similarities from one person to another or from one region to another region.
  3. Listen to yourself – Listening to yourself is an amazing way of improving your listening skills. This way of improving your listening skills is related to the previous one. If you’re having a conversation with yourself in front of the mirror or in your head, you’re already listening to yourself. Use your own voice to practice your Kannada listening skills!
  4. Overhear a Kannada conversation – Listen for any new words you may not know, and also try to see if you can catch what the conversation is about. You can search for English conversation on a bus, in a cafe or at a park—but hopefully not a movie theatre!  At first, you won’t know what they’re talking about since you’ll probably start listening in the middle of the conversation. This will make it even more challenging to understand, but also more fun.
  5. Start reading books – As you read through the text, identify any new words you come across. See if you can guess the meaning of the words from their context; otherwise, look them up in a dictionary. If there are any new words that you think will be particularly useful for you in conversation, write them down and add them to your list of new vocabulary to learn. Pay careful attention to these words and be sure to listen out for them when you repeat the audio.
