Introduction:
You have learned a few important things about Sanskrit. And now you want to improve your writing skills in Sanskrit. Even though you do not know grammar you can learn how to “draw” Sanskrit characters, which is enough to make sentences by yourself.
These steps will help you to improve your writing skills in Sanskrit quickly:
You must have learned the Sanskrit Alphabet at the start. Go to First strokes 1 and First strokes 2 in order to learn how to draw every Sanskrit character, also tables are another useful document to use as a complement to the present one.
There are 50 original letters in the Alphabet, and there are a lot more. These new letters are called the Conjuncts, and these are formed from two or more original letters. Have these Conjuncts documents at hand, because you will need them.
- Develop your Writing format
Write Sanskrit is just similar to English from left-right and up-down. The horizontal stroke is drawn at the end, more strokes are on top of it; in this case, that stroke is drawn at the end. For example, write the letter “ta”: त firstly with the hook, secondly the vertical stroke, and finally the end of the horizontal stroke.
This process is very simple. The Sanskrit Alphabet is “syllabic”. Consonants are accompanied by a vowel. Without any vowels, you cannot pronounce the consonants.
- Read sacred texts written in Sanskrit.
The Digital Library of India has scanned nearly 34,000 texts in Sanskrit. Many of these digital files have been available for free download at https://sanskritdocuments.org/scannedbooks/.The same site also has audio recordings of many of these texts available at https://sanskritdocuments.org/audio/.
An audio reading of the Bhagavad Gita, one of India’s most sacred texts, is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhW6QvNYTd8, you can use this site to improve your writing skills in Sanskrit.
- Usage of Sanskrit in Yoga
If you have ever taken a yoga class, you likely already know a handful of Sanskrit words by practicing various positions in Yoga, all the pose names are based on Sanskrit script which is taught by your yoga instructor
To improve my writing skills in Sanskrit, learn Sanskrit by each of the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet. From there you can expand your vocabulary and improve yourself with the beauty of this classical language
- Concentrate on Conjuncts
A Conjunct is simply a group of consonants were all consonants of a Conjunct lack “a” except the last one. The last consonant can take any vowel apart from “a”, to make “standard” Conjuncts. A Conjunct consists of up to five consonants.
- Conjuncts with their component elements fully discernible
- Conjuncts formed from several consonants without piling up.
- Conjuncts formed from several consonants with simply piled up.
- Conjuncts with their component elements
- Conjuncts formed from several consonants merged in each other
- Conjuncts with their component elements undiscernible
- Conjuncts formed from forming an entirely new letter.
You need to learn how to add other vowels apart from “a” to the consonants.
You can see the Sanskrit Alphabet document used at the beginning of a word. You need vowel support to be pronounced. But when the vowels are not placed in the beginning, every vowel has a respective abbreviation to be used after a consonant.
