These numbers are a little irregular so you will just have to learn them by heart.

Numbers ranging from 20 to 69 in French

You simply add the single number (units) to the tens number to write the numbers from 20 to 69 in French.

To connect the two numbers, a hyphen is used.

vingt (20) + deux (2) = vingt-deux (22)

trente (30) + sept (7) = trente-sept (37)

quarante (40) + neuf (9) = quarante-neuf (49)

vingt et un or vingt-et-un?

The numbers ending in 1 after the number 20 (21, 31, 41, etc.) may appear with two different spellings.

A new spelling rule went into effect in 1990, requiring all numbers made up of two or more words, including large numbers, to be joined with hyphens (dashes).

21 = vingt et un (orthographe traditionnelle – traditional spelling)

21 = vingt-et-un (orthographe rectifiée de 1990 – rectified spelling as of 1990)

In French, numbers ranging from 70 to 100.

The numbers following 69 follow a different rule than you may be used to.

Soixante-dix is the French word for 70. You will notice that it is a combination of soixante 

(60) + dix (10)

The remaining numbers in the 70s follow the same pattern of 60 + a number ranging from 10 to 19.

70 – soixante-dix

71 – soixante-onze

72 – soixante-douze

73 – soixante-treize

74 – soixante-quatorze

75 – soixante-quinze

76 – soixante-seize

77 – soixante-dix-sept

78 – soixante-dix-huit

79 – soixante-dix-neuf (which is literally 60 + 19)

When dealing with numbers in the 80s, the term quatre-vingt is used, which translates to “four twenties” (in old English Four score was used instead of eighty thanks to this French influence)

80 – quatre-vingts (take a note that vingts ends in an S)

81 – quatre-vingt-un (observe that vingt does not end in an S)

82 – quatre-vingt-deux

83 – quatre-vingt-trois

84 – quatre-vingt-quatre

85 – quatre-vingt-cinq

86 – quatre-vingt-six

87 – quatre-vingt-sept

88 – quatre-vingt-huit

89 – quatre-vingt-neuf

In French, the number 90 is written as quatre-vingt-dix. You’ll notice it’s a combination of quatre-vingt (80) + dix (10)

Isn’t that easy! 

In French, another equivalent to saying 70, 80, and 90.

There are separate words for 70, 80, and 90 in French-speaking parts of Belgium and Switzerland. They are as follows:

70 – septante

80 – huitante

90 – nonante

So in these areas, 73 is septante-trois, 85 is huitante-cinq and 96 is nonante-six etc.

Once you’ve mastered the pronunciation of French numbers, it’s time to put your ears to the test. Choose an audio clip or video from French Circles, or a francophone club that offers online classes. As you hear the numbers, jot them down. Depending on your comfort level with French numbers, you can let the video play naturally, only pausing to write your answers. You can also pause and rewind, listening to the audio as many times as necessary. The answers are included at the end of audio and video dictations. Check yourself and record your score so you can see how far you’ve come with each dictation exercise. You’ve practised saying and hearing numbers. It’s now time to practise writing and spelling.

Using money to practise counting is a fantastic way to learn French numbers. When it comes to financial transactions of any size, whether it’s buying sushi or paying rent on a Tokyo apartment, the stakes are higher than usual. If you don’t do your math correctly, you might end up paying too much.

Money is something everybody is familiar with, even if it is in English, and it is something you will do every day while studying in a French-speaking country. You must become acquainted with the euro and learn how to construct sentences using French numbers and currency. The best way to get started is to observe and learn. Fortunately, the internet simplifies these tasks.

You’re ready to make it happen. Take a partner and assign one person to play the shopkeeper and the other to play the customer. If you don’t have a partner, don’t worry—just play both parts. You can also read a pre-written dialogue online and play the role of your choice.

There are also numerous websites where you can connect with other French learners. Try it with someone you met on one of these online platforms.

Second, decide what kind of store you want to simulate. Make sure to change the scenario each time so you can incorporate a variety of vocabulary while also learning your numbers.
