Here are different proficiency levels of Spanish language as per the DELE Spanish Diplomas (which stands for Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera or Diplomas of Spanish as Foreign Language).
- A1 or Breakthrough – This is the beginner level where the learner learns the language to the extent of using it for immediate needs or everyday situations. This helps in simple and basic interaction which includes talking about yourself, the place where you live, about people and their possessions etc.
- A2 or Waystage – A person at this level can understand commonly used words, phrases and expressions which are relevant to them. This includes basic information about self and family, other areas of interest and importance like work, shopping etc.
- B1 or Threshold – At this level, a learner can get the gist of the conversation or text which is in standard language. The learner can interact and understand their speaker in many varied situations. Apart from being able to understand familiar topics, at this level, you can also describe your opinions and other experiences, events and even talk about wishes and ambitions.
- B2 or Vantage – This is the level at which you can comfortably interact with a native speaker with a good level of fluency and spontaneously. Based on individual areas of specialization you can even understand the gist of a complex text dealing with both abstract and practical issues.
- C1 or Effective Operational Proficiency – At this level, you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without struggling for the appropriate words. At this, you can easily communicate both in verbal and written format in different scenarios very comfortably.
- C2 or Mastery – At this level, you can understand almost everything that you hear or read in Spanish. You are not only able to express yourself fluently with precision but are also able to understand the subtle nuances of meanings.
To be able to mention the exact level at which you are in Spanish, you can appear for the DELE examination which is conducted four or five times a year in India. This examination is conducted by the Institute Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science at designated centres. It is important to understand that not all exams are conducted at all the centres.
