The word “English” derives from the “Angles,” a Germanic population that lived in the first millennium A.D. in Britain. Although most Muslims are not fluent speakers of Arabic, the language is of particular significance to the second-largest religion in the world. Islam believes that God (via the angel Gabriel) simply spoke in Arabic while he dictated the Quran to Prophet Mohammed. That was 1400 years ago and current Arabic dialects have changed a lot from the ‘Classical Arabic’ of the Quran.

In Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Malay is a lingua franca. In areas of Thailand and the Philippines, you can hear it being spoken. Malay is spoken in a highly linguistically complex region. In Indonesia alone, over 700 languages can be found. Bahasa Melayu has emerged as a lingua franca of the region and is the language of government and trade. It is one of the most spoken languages on our list of 10 most spoken languages in the world.

The next language on our list of the 10 most spoken languages in the world is French. French is another Romance language. It is the lingua franca of 28 countries, with the largest proportion of participants in France, Belgium, Canada, and Switzerland (in that order). In areas of West and Central Africa, on many Caribbean islands, and also on the continent of South America, it is often spoken (in the French overseas department of French Guiana).

Being widespread in the Soviet Union Nations, Russian is also widely spoken in the Post-Soviet States (PSU) and has gained official status in many sub-national territories. Ukrainian and Belarusian ancestors are among Russia’s nearest relatives. All three are inherited from the language spoken by Kievan Rus in the medieval state. Dating back to the 3rd century, the Portuguese language has originated from Latin and is one of the ‘Romance Languages’ which is closely connected with modern Spanish. The root word of the term Portuguese comes from ‘Portugal’ where ‘Porto’ means ‘port’. Portuguese developed fully by the 13th century but was known as ‘Galician-Portuguese’.
