Why are high school German classes so terrible?

German is the most widely spoken mother tongue in Europe, it is an important language in the history of religion, philosophy as well as in science and technology. Many English-speakers find German a little harder to learn than French or Spanish, due in part to its complex grammar. Some of the languages like German are so terrible to study in high school.

Here are the reasons why high school German classes are so terrible

Improper textbooks and materials

high school teachers are rarely native or near-native speakers. The determining factor in the high school German classes are actually based on the materials they are using. The material will not elevate the teacher tutoring process. When a good teacher is forced to follow bad material then it will hinder the teaching progress. High school German classes depend mostly on materials and textbooks, thus they are so terrible.

Young Man, Student, Studying, Learning

Judge the materials before you judge the teachers, and no do not begin with classes or texts that solely use the German language. This approach will lead to laziness and willingness to hire teachers who have knowledge in a single language in the high school classes.

Slow classes

High school classes seek daily homework assignments that effectively fire students from the class who do not perform. The school does not have a strict curriculum for a minority of the class. They used to downgrade the students with at least five proficiency levels for separate classes such as beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The jump between the classes is relatively small which will prevent the students from moving to the next level of learning and there are not sufficient numbers of students at each level for the school to justify paying for the separate teachers. There are a dozen high schools in Germany with at least 20 different skill levels.

Improper practice

Language fluency is more dependent on practising the right things than learning the right things. The grammar rules can be learned through materials and classes, but the necessary tools such as vocabulary and idiomatic usage will come only from independent study and practice in a native environment, where high schools do not follow these. High school grammar is often challenging for school students.

Grammar can be learned with writing exercises, whereas “conversation” cannot be learned like doing exercises. High schools depend on homework exercises. But a real one-on-one conversation should be followed for improving the pronunciation level for every individual. It focuses only on several native books or comics to identify sticking points, which are then later discussed in one-on-one language exchanges and does not explain rules.

Finally,

Kindergarten and primary school classes are better than the high school German classes. The high school German classes receive 160 fewer hours of lessons than the primary school German classes do, also the students inevitably receive less individual attention in their education.
