The Difference
Although Arabic and Urdu seem to be very similar, there is a lot of difference between both languages. Arabic being one of the widely used languages in the world has influenced many other languages like Persian, Turkish, Hindi, Urdu, and even Spanish. And Urdu mostly consists of words from Persian, Sanskrit, and Arabic languages.
The main difference between them lies in their origins. Arabic is an Afro- Asiatic language whereas Urdu is an Indo- European language.
Urdu as a new language originated and developed in the northern region of India. Urdu developed under the Mughal invaders in the 11th and 12th centuries. These invaders spoke Persian and wrote in Arabic and it was influenced by the regional languages of India that is Sanskrit and Hindi forming a completely new language that was called Urdu.
Arabic is commonly spoken in the middle east and parts of Africa and Urdu is spoken in parts of the middle east and northern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Although Urdu has its origin in Arabic, Arabic speakers cannot read or understand Urdu. This happens because Urdu is a mixture of various other languages and borrows a lot of its words from them which do not really mean the same in Arabic. However, Urdu speakers can read Arabic because it uses the same script.
Another major difference in both languages is the pronunciations. Both the languages have different vowel and consonant sounds that change the way a particular word is said also it can bring a change in the meanings.
Though Urdu is written in the Arabic script, both languages have more differences than similarities. Making both of them unique in their own ways.
